<p>The base known as the Engine and Repair Depot when it opened in April 1918, and changed to Maxwell Field in November 1922. It served as an Air Repair Depot during World War I and continued in use postwar as a landing field for air mail operations. The base expanded during late 1920s/early 1930s. The Air Corps Tactical School arrived in 1931, and the base conducted pilot training during World War II. The AAF School moved from Orlando, Florida in December 1945 and became an Air University three months later. The 3800th Air University Wing was formed in July 1948 and subsequently changed to ABW status. The unit was redesignated as the 502nd ABW in July 1993. The AFRes unit was activated in April 1969.
